In response to my request for information to support semi-flexible scheduling in a K-5 elementary school LMC I received the following: 1. Read the following article - better yet, make a copy and give it to your district administrator! http://www.slj.com/articles/articles/20000401_7475.asp You will find it in print form in the April 2000 issue of School Library Journal. 2. The main argument is that PE and music have stand-alone curricula but information literacy skills need to be taught within the context of classroom content in order to produce the desired results. Linking library lessons to classroom units is crucial and it's very hard to do that without teacher planning and participation. 3. The Jan/Feb 2001 issue of "Library Talk" has an article on Flex sched. in the elem. school. 4. > >From ALA, this bibliography links to studies and writings based on the > studies: > Student Achievement > http://www.ala.org/aasl/resources/achievement.html > > Proof of the Power: > Quality Library Media Programs Affect Academic Achievement > by Keith Curry Lance . Director, Library Research Service . Colorado > State Library and University of Denver > MultiMedia Schools . Today's School Media Specialist > http://www.schoolmediaspecialist.com/articles/1c1feat2.html > 5. There is an article in this month's School Library Journal related to this topic. 6. AASL has a bibliography of flexible scheduling resources (one of our online Resource Guides for School Library Media Program Development) at http://www.ala.org/aasl/resources/flexible.html . Hopefully some of the cited resources will be of assistance to you. Thank you for your help! It was great to have some literature to share with the administration, though I'm not sure yet how much it influenced him.
