Thank you to all the people who took the time to weigh in on this interesting topic. The following is a run down on the titles, alternatives and ideas on the subject. Thanks again for your input! The thing about SLJ is that's it's not just the reviews. There are program ideas, displays and bulletin boards, conference offerings, freebies to send for, etc. I have always liked The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books. It is a little pricey but the reviews are well written and not interrupted by all kinds of ads. I subscribe to Booklist - I had thought of SLJ as I had used it when I was in an elementary (K-8) school and found it invaluable. But I can't afford it now and Booklist does the job admirably. At school I subscribe to School Library Journal and Teacher/Librarian Personally I also subscribe to a publication "Book" I use book more for my book ordering than I do SLJ or T/L. I read them for articles about librarianship.l I use Booklist and recommend it highly. It meets my needs perfectly. I = especially enjoyed the best of 2001 issue. I like Booklist the best for reviews, but SLJ has more news and editorials and both positive and negative reviews, so I wouldn't want to be without that one either. I am lucky enough to also be able to subscribe to Hornbook (wonderful in-depth articles about children's literature) and the Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, which also has positive and negative reviews. If a positive review appears in at least 2 or 3 of these journals, I am more interested in purchasing copies. I think SLJ is a must have and I don't mind paying for it...Booklinks is ok but not essential and I cancelled it last year. I do like the Horn Book yearbook for reviews. My other favorites: 1. The Book Report 2. VOYA I have a personal subscription for Teacher-librarian and share a subscription for Resource Links. I use to get Horn book, but again it's budget problems. I never had the time to read all the articles. I'd like to get SLJ because it's mentioned so often in LM_Net discussions. I don't subscribe to SLJ - the middle school librarian lends me her copy and I trade her Book Report. I also get: Library journal and VOYA Christine Anselmo LMS Bayview Elementary West Islip, NY sendtochris74@optonline.net =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
