Both can be tossed through Tools / Internet Options. (assuming Windows /IE) However, if you have sites that you visit often that are personalized (say Amazon's @@@@'s store, NYT subscription, MyYahoo, weather sites) you will lose that information if you delete the cookie file. If you have your registration info handy, it is usually pretty quickly reentered when you next revisit that site. There may be a slight slowdown in loading sites you revisit as it reloads the cache. How apparent it is would depend on number of graphics and your connection speed. Utility packages like Norton's Systemworks, OnTrack SystemSuite, McAfee Office Pro have options for selective deletion of cookies by site or other criteria. They also have AntiVirus packages, manage the temp files (there are many in addition to the internet ones), help keep HD in order, track system changes and settings when software or hardware is installed, and offer other features. There are reviews and comparison articles at ZDNet.com and other places. Also, there are shareware utilities that will do this, take a look at Tucows.com for those. Many of the functions are automated (AV updates, system checkups, etc) so they happen right at startup or at set times. My machine is set to do some things at shutdown (which Carol thinks never happens), and major check and cleanups one evening a week. The range of utilities is quite large, with many specialized functions. The larger packages offer a similar range with the benefit of a consistent interface and automation of important tasks. Of course, one package may be stronger in one area and weaker in another. The problem = is I am not sure what is "unneeded"! =20 Specifically: will I do any damage if I delete everything in the cookie = folder? Then what about the two folders within windows labeled "temp" = and "temporary internet files"? =20 TIA. =20 Pat Wassink formerly of Colfax El.
