Dear LMNetters:

Thank you for your responses to this. There are fourteen other librarians
in the same situation. I wanted to clarify (since it is pretty obvious
that my short note was TOO short) that I already have a library pass.
The pass gives the following options: take a test, read a book or magazine,
check out a book, research. I just wanted ideas for more options and
to give teachers a better idea of how the library could be utilized.
I love having the students in there and have blocks during the day for
"hang out" time. My beef is with teachers who send students to me, and
it is obvious they think of me in a "babysitting" sort of capacity.

Additional reasons to add to my list were:

create a graph of magazine titles, number of copies,
actual number of copies on shelf...

No P.E. dress out? Research and write article on
sport currently playing.

Shop class? research project design and pictures.

View video on subject class is studying.

to become enlightened through curiousity

Thank you for all of your responses. It was interesting to read and
see how other people dealt with the problems.

In general librarians:

- Create a Purpose Pass, one side for the media center and the other
for the lab, with six check-offs each of general reasons why one might
come visit.
- Communicate effectively what appropriate library and lab use looks
like and sounds like
- Tell your faculty your expectations
- Walk over to any kids doing nothing and talk to them then, if
necessary, send them back on a pass. The pass can explain why or you
can email the teacher and tell them that their students were not using
the library.
- Teachers send a max of 5 per period and the students have to have something
to do
- Students have an agenda notebook that they must carry with them everytime
they leave class. There's a place for the teacher or student to put a
date, where the student is going and a place for the teacher's
initials. When students come to the library without their agendas, they
have to go back to class and have them signed.
- Create passes with preprinted reasons (Research, Use Reference Materials,
Read Quietly, Find Materials and Return to Class, Other)
- Send a note at the beginning of the year to all the faculty and explain
the "new rules" - students need to have work, limit numbers, etc. Then
when the 6th or 7th student arrives, send them back. And if they aren't
doing work, send them back.
- Students from study hall need to request a pass from the teacher who's
work they want to complete in the library.
- We made up a very simple pass on brightred paper. All the teacher
has to do is initial and time the kid out. If they don't have one they
go back. NO EXCEPTIONS
- Give them one warning about behavior and the consequence (i.e. being
sent back to class). If they can't behave then I send them back-period.

Thank you for the responses,
Susan Myers
