Thanks for all that sent in info. Here is all of the info I collected:

I use a lesson from Genres of Literature: An Elementary Exploration of the
World of Books, Grade 2-5 by Kelly Speer Hatfield. available at
www.instructionalfair.com for $9.99.
The book has a flow chart in it that I use with the kids. I have one book
that fits each category and we go through the questions in the flow chart to
determine in which genre each book belongs. I can send the lesson plan, if
you can get the book.
Also, check out my Reading Page online for genres.

Our yearlong reading theme this year is Books in Bloom: A Garden of Genres.
I have web sites and booklists for the first three months so far...Folklore,
Mystery, & History.

I just did a great lesson today with the third grade using the Time Warp
Trio series and we put them all on a timeline. Probably could do this for
Magic Tree House too.

Lisa,

This lesson was successful with my third graders. I did a
colorful powerpoint, scanning in bookcovers from each genre title and then
listing the characteristics of the genre beside the book cover. I showed
the powerpoint, then booktalked books from each genre and had them guess
what genre each book was. As a wrap up, I placed 5 different types of books
on each table with cards listing 5 genre types. They had to match the cards
with the books.

Good luck. Let me know if you get some other good ideas,
because I need to change this lesson when I do it again next year when they
are fourth graders.

A little late for a book but Teaching Genre by Tara McCarthy from Scholastic
is really great.

I teach fourth grade in south carolina. Genre is a major part of our

> sc

standards. I ususally use my read alouds that we have read to explain
genre.

For examle the Junie B. Jones as realistic fiction, Magic Tree House as

historical fiction and fantasy. I also share Silverstein to introduce
poetry.

This may not help. I usually teach the genre as I come to it rather than
one

lesson. I also keep a laminated genre chart in my room. Each time we
intoduce

a new story, we put the title on the chart and a check in the box beside
what

genre they predict the story is. After reading the story, we check out
genre

chart to see if our predictions were correct. If it wasn't we erase and
chane

it. Hope this helps.

This year to introduce my genre lesson I asked for student volunteers to
dress up in costumes, which represented genre (the students did not know why
there volunteering - I hid the kids behind a white board and got them into
costume and then they all walked out together).

The costumes - detective (mystery)

                      - pirate - complete with parrot adventure

                      - alien (sci-fi)

                      - witch fantasy

There were more, but I am sure you get the idea. We then talked about the
critical attributes of each genre and discussed how the students could
locate their favorite genre fiction (card catalog, subject labels,
bibliographies, etc.)

The kids really enjoyed it! They were also more focused on my lesson...I
taught this in October when all the kids were really excited about Halloween
but I am sure they would enjoy it anytime.
