I have had a request for a bibliography for 4th and 5th graders on children
coping with and/or overcoming serious problems, such as parent with HIV,
poverty, low self-esteem, etc. The teacher will be reading to inner city
children, so she wants the titles to be relevant for them. She will be
reading on a regular basis, but for different time periods. She wants
picture books and novels, but not "character building" series or preachy
self-help books. I have not had as much success as I thought I would have in
compiling the list. All suggestions would be very helpful. Thanks!
