Perhaps a little late for this year - today is our last day before Thanksgiving: I tell/act out the story of Stone Soup, with some customized embellishments of my own. Instead of a traveler, a homeless man is wandering from town to town in my version. He has no home, no job, no money, no food, etc. The people of the town are not suspicious just because he is a stranger, but more so because he is "different." I take my cast iron Dutch oven and a long wooden spoon, as well as a basket with a real onion, carrot, celery stick, potato, and a doggie squeakie toy that resembles a small t-bone steak. I have pewter salt & pepper shakers, and don't forget the stone - or several, so the man can choose the best one! I keep everything except the pot hidden in the basket, and bring it out as the story progresses, adding, stirring, tasting. It's funny how the little ones can't wait to see what I've been "eating" when the story is over!! Of course, I wrap up with a message of being thankful for what you have, even if it seems like little, and how if we all share a little of what we have, then there is enough for everyone! This ties in nicely with our Food Drive which is usually taking place at the same time, so I put in a plug for that and remind students what is good to bring and what is not. -- Leah Hawkins, Librarian West Hurst Elementary Hurst, TX leahleah@attbi.com > > Does anyone have any "novel" Thanksgiving storytime ideas? > > TIA, > > Kim > > > > Kimberlin A.
