I've been using The First Thanksgiving by Linda Hayward, with a lot of
embellishments.

We note when 1620 is - after Columbus, but before George Washington and the
13 colonies.
We use a world map to find England and the Atlantic Ocean, and the coast of
the United States.

Then we look at a rad atlas with a map of Massachusetts. I point out
Plymouth and its proximity to Cape Cod and Boston.

When the story talks about the difficult long voyage we talk about how bad
things must have been in England and how much the people wanted to get to
America.

We talk about the picture of the Pilgrim village, and how some students have
been to the village replica in Plymouth, MA. There is a replica of the
Mayflower there, too.

And we talk about Abraham Lincoln - the man on our penny, the president
during the Civil War.

The students have so many questions - about the bathroom on the Mayflower,
about needing fresh water to drink, etc. It takes a good 25 minutes to read
and explain and answer questions.

I'm sure there are wonderful web sites out there to help with this but I
haven't had a lot of time to look yet.
