My original post was as follows:

This is only my second year as a library media specialist, but I am in =
the
position to provide input on the new school proposed for my town. I have
purchased a great resource on facilities (published by Linworth -- my
principal currently has the book or I'd give the exact title - I'll =
include
it with my HIT). However, what I'm interested in hearing from this group =
are
those things that are "must haves" in a library facility. I'd also be
interested in hearing about the things to avoid. The building I am in =
now is
very outdated and we have very little technology, but we are trying to
improve that. Suggestions? I will post a HIT with responses.
Thank you in advance for your help. I really want to help make this new
facility the best that it can be!

Thank you, thank you to all who responded. This will certainly help me =
make valuable recommendations to the committee working on the design of =
our new school.=20
Here is a compilation of the responses received.

a.. Outlets, outlets, outlets -- put in more than you think you'll =
need. Place them in the floor to avoid being tied to walls.
b.. Maintain strong sight lines for supervision
c.. Think in terms of zones by specific use of the area
d.. Display areas -- books, pamphlets, etc.
  e.. Windows and natural lighting
f.. Area for student production away from faculty area
  g.. Sink -- recommended numerous times=20
  h.. Locking closet for storage
  i.. TV studio
j.. Bulletin boards and wall space
k.. Stay away from cafeteria if possible because of noise
  l.. Conference room
m.. Stay away from two story set up
n.. Lots of computer access points -- wireless if possible
o.. Place computer monitors for ease of staff monitoring their use
p.. Shelves with built in dividers
  q.. Shelves with backs=20
r.. Avoid a pit area (2 step down square)
s.. Phone with outside line at circulation desk
t.. Lounge area with magazine shelving
u.. Computer to overhead tv connection
v.. Permission to meet with the architects, not just interior =
designers
w.. Smart boards and LCD projectors
x.. Look for a consultant who knows libraries to assist with design
  y.. Visit other schools
z.. Dedicated space for the server
aa.. Separate room for professional collection=20
ab.. Room for growth of collection in all formats and room for storage
ac.. Flow should be assessed so that interruption can be minimized and =
efficient use maximized
ad.. Separate work area where piles of books and work can be left out
ae.. Story steps big enough for a class to sit on for story time
af.. Reading cubbies (compartments in the wall big enough for two kids =
to read in, carpeted all over, with lights)
ag.. Bathroom and water fountain near or in the library
ah.. Book cases with attachments on the ends for displays
ai.. Long laminated counter for processing materials
What a great list of suggestions of things to include and a few to =
avoid. If you don't see something on this list that you feel strongly =
would make my facility better, please email me at cgwest@buggs.net . I =
truly appreciate all the help on this.

The book I mentioned in my original post is Facilities Planning for =
School Library Media and Technology Centers by Steven M. Baule, Linworth =
Publishers, 1999. It is an excellent resource.
