We received just such a form recently. It was so extensive that it
virtually prevented the child from being in any class! The parent dropped
it off signed, with no explanation. When invited in by the principal to
discuss the form she admitted that she had heard about it on talk radio,
downloaded it from the Internet, signed it and brought it to school
WITHOUT EVER READING IT!!!! She actually only wanted to opt out of
health/sex ed! Our principal sent it to the Supt. who forwarded it to the
school lawyers who said it was not a legally binding form but I don't know
the details of how they decided that. One website that promotes this type
of form is :
www.pacificjustice.org There is also an interesting article on it about
a librarian permitting access to pornography by a minor but, as often is
the case with some websites, there is very little hard info or specifics.
I read quite a few of the articles and they all seemed to be similar, long
on emotional rhetoric but short of specifics and hard facts. By the way,
our health teacher always sends home an outline of her sex ed course and
asks parents to sign a permission slip that their children can
participate!
