First, I was tickled pink that the music teacher asked the question before doing anything. However I didn't have an answer that was concrete so I'm asking for help. He wants to do a musical presentation at a concert using the Wizard of Oz (book) and a narrator would do the only speaking. The students would then sing the rest which would be excerpts/condensed version. He wants to know if this violates copyright. My response was if it was a shortened version of the story in his words he might be able to do it, but should definitely give credit in the program. I also suggested contacting the publisher, but he countered with "what if they say no?" [To me that would mean you don't do it.] He wondered if the copyright had expired; I'm pretty sure the family or estate would have renewed that when due. I'm new to this school and had handed out copyright information during workshops; I know at least one person read them! :-) Thanks in advance!
