That is a delimma and a situation I've never had to deal with. I would
address it from an economics and curriculum viewpoint, something most
people can undrstand. We can't afford duplicates etc. . . we want everyone
to have access etc. . . . . Our teachrs can check out as many books as
they like, but we never have a problem with them not being returned.
Your situation sounds very difficult. Is the principal aware?
When I first began my job in the school I'm at I learned that my
predecessor had always checked the geography project book out to the
classrooms for projects. The teachers were good at sharing, but lots of
books were lost. I gradully weaned them from that habit by only checking
out the old books to them, ordering lots of new books, and weeding. Then
we gradually integrated tehcnology into the geography units (this is back
in the 80's) and the kids started comin to the media center more. After a
few years the teachers declared they didn't want materials checked out to
them.
