My original posting was regarding the Wizard of Oz book. The music teacher wants to have a performance using excerpts from the book (narrator) and his students will sing the parts/story. He wanted to know if there would be a copyright violation. Below is a response I received; I have more questions to ask when visiting the teacher. (As a P.S. the teacher did tell me this week that he has purchased some of the music already for school and therefore has the rights to use that.) ____________________________ "Well, the ORIGINAL Wizard of Oz is in the public domain because it was published before 1923. Baum died in 1919, so there is no way that anything published in his lifetime would be protected. That being said, there are all sorts of adaptations of the original. THOSE may be protected by copyright. So is the motion picture, the music from the motion picture, etc. So there is a LOT of information that needs to be collected before a determination can be given." ______________________________ Nancy Voltmer voltmer@netins.net Teacher-Librarian Hiatt Middle School Des Moines, Iowa =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
