Thank you so much for your responses!
I have experienced much success with the free program from The Tiger Woods
Foundation and Target stores, called Start Something. Many minority youth
read the book that Earl wrote about raising Tiger and work through the
character development program that includes reading and journaling.
Again, it is free, includes lesson plans and student activities.
You can order a copy by going to target.com and click on the Start Something
logo on the right.
The "AR" (Accelerated Reader) program motivates kids to read who have never
read before. However, the incentives must be something the kids would really
want to work for and gain points.
Sports books will work for this age level/group. Perhaps if you address
this with language arts staff or your principal, you can spend time during
school hours to read/discuss. Many reluctant readers won't come after
school for anything...In one School Library Journal, there was an article on
mapping the major basketball tournament with a bulletin board, having
students research and update scores, while keeping track of the geographical
locations of the teams. It sounded like something that would tie in.
