Every fall I do an orientation for Freshmen. This is also when I go over
the AUP and give out the sheets that must be signed by both student and
parent for computer use. I also give a quick overview of where things are in
the Media Center, the expected behavior and procedures (checkout, etc.) and
there is a hands-on worksheet that they are required to do in the period. I
can send a copy to anyone who wants one. Very simple, step-by-step
instructions with short answers. I work with them on the part that has to do
with our Winnebago system as that way it goes faster and I can make sure
they understand what they are seeing. The rest of the worksheet deals with
using a couple of our databases and some things I have bookmarked from the
Internet.

The rest of the time, I do one-on-one as needed and with classes at teacher
request. For example, next week all week I will be having students for at
least three periods doing research and we will be using both print and
on-line materials. I will be working with each group and the teacher will
be here also. This is the start of a very involved and extensive project
with both science and English Departments that will take approximately 8
weeks. There will be numerous work sessions here in the Media Center. The
end result will be a multi-media project, a 6 page paper and a class session
where they do a 20 minute presentation and a 5 minute quiz.

Subject: SEC: Orientation

Hello all,

Do any of you in high school media centers do an orientation for your =
students? If so, do you do it for all students? Do you do it on an as =
needed basis? What exactly do you cover? =20

In the past I've just done orientations on an as needed basis, but I =
feel that my students need to know about the media center even if they =
don't have a specific project they are working on. =20

Any suggestions you could give me would be greatly appreciated. =20
