The post about telling kids to turn their volume down to a 5 reminds me of something that makes me laugh. At the beginning of the year, like all of us I go over my rules and consequences. The rules are simple: Follow the directions, Take care of the books, Keep library books in your desk or your backpack, and LOOK at the aquarium. I use "three strikes and you are out" for consequences. Out is the time out chair, and if necessary a discipline referral. So occasionally I have to say to a kid, That's strike one. It usually gets them right back on track. But I've been in situations where my discipline has NOT been spelled out, or when I am dealing with an entire class and chaos is looming. I just say ONE. That's it. Just ONE. No explanation. No screaming. And for the most part, every one who is talking loudly or acting goofy suddenly straightens up. My husband has done this with his seventh grade general music class. It works for him. It even works with my four year old. And she has no idea what I am doing. I guess saying ONE gets their attention. I think it is funny.
