I have to say that I have used that technique with grade 10s from hell, and
it was amazing how well it worked. But I have another funny story to share.
Yesterday was the last day of semester one in my school of 1100 students.
As we check out all the textbooks through the library you can imagine what
it is like when ALL the textbooks are turned in on Wed, and then ALL the
texts are signed out for semester two on Monday. We are surrounded by
stacks and stacks of books as we check them in and arrange them in piles for
the new classes. It is an exhausting process for my technician and myself,
lifting books, moving them from pile to pile, making sure there are enough
for each class. As you can imagine, by the end of the day we were dead. In
the midst of all this chaos, a grade 10 girl came rushing up to the counter
and said in a panicked voice - "You have to help me, I left my essay in my
textbook!" I looked around at the piles upon piles of books and just
started to laugh. So I asked her what textbook it was. Her answer? "You
know, the big one." Needless to say, we couldn't find her essay.
