Dear Newbies (including myself), I have stumbled across some resources that might be of interest to you. First of all is a book that is written expressly for newbies: New Steps to Service: Common-sense Advice for the School Library Media Specialist, by Ann Wasman and Mildred L. Nickel, published by Chicago ALA Editions of the American Library Association, 1998. I skipped over the first two chapters (more a history of where we came from and where we are going - may read them later) and jumped to the meat of the matter. The third chapter talks more about what to look for on your first visit to the media center and what documents to review including checklists for both. The fourth chapter includes activities for the first week of school (I haven't completed this chapter yet). So far the book seems to be full of practical advice for those of us entering our first year of service. Although I have not read the whole book, it already seems like an invaluable resource for newbies. I am able to access it through netlibrary.com. Also, as I was looking for the proper subject heading to include in the e-mail (i.e., Gen, Sec, Elem, Target, etc.), I came across a compilation of newbie advice that has been posted to LM_Net in past years: Newbies survival tips (http://ericir.syr.edu/lm_net/newbies.htm). If you are like me, you are looking for as much information as you can find to start the new year: lesson plans, forms, advice, etc. While I haven't looked at the information there, since it has come from seasoned professionals it might be worth taking a look at. In any event, I know this year is going to be an exciting adventure and our friends on LM_Net are going to be there to hold our hands and guide us along the way. Maybe these two resources I have mentioned will help us to be a little better prepared for the first day, the second day, the third day ... until we can finally look back and say what a wonderful year this was - it sure did fly by. Good luck on your first year and remember you are not in this alone, Vaneesa Vaneesa Thompson Library Media Specialist West Morgan Schools Trinity, Alabama Vaneesat@aol.com ______________________________________ My mind contains many good ideas, but it is not always easy to squeeze one out.
