Robyn,

We use hand held bar code scanners that are light weight, and shaped to be
held conveniently. Our original scanners were purchased from our automation
company, and by accident, we heard about a different company that sells
scanners that double as portable inventory wands. They simply detach from
the cable that connects them to the computer, and clip onto a small battery
pack. Using bar code commands they can be configured for inventory, and
then go to the shelf and scan barcodes. Then they are simply reattached to
the cable, and the inventory data is uploaded into a text file in the
computer. Inventory with these devices couldn't be simpler, and the icing
on the cake is that they cost about 1/3rd what similar devices from our
automation company cost. However, it should be noted that these devices do
not contain the ability to double as PDA's, only to greatly simplify
inventory and do double duty as checkin/check/out scanners. If you're
interested, I would recommend getting in touch with the company. It is ID
Recall Systems, 1540 Pine Crest Drive, Grants Pass, OR 97526, or
www.idrecall.com, or info@idrecall.com. People there have been most helpful
as far as determining compatibility with automation software, etc. Good
Luck,

Linda Lucke
