"Glory" the movie

One of our middle school social studies teachers would like to show the
movie, "Glory" (1989) with Denzel Washington and Matthew Broderick.
She is sending out a permission form to the parents and wants to
include on what basis the movie is rated r.  (strong violence, etc.)

Has anyone seen this movie that they can give a general description of
the plot?

The teacher obviously will be previewing the movie before hand, but
just wanted any information.  Thank you.
