2003 NATIONAL BOOK FESTIVAL TO BE HELD
OCTOBER 4 ON THE NATIONAL MALL


         Librarian of Congress James H. Billington has announced Saturday,=
=20
Oct. 4, as the date for the third annual National Book Festival.  The=20
popular festival is organized and sponsored by the Library of Congress and=
=20
hosted by Mrs. Laura Bush.  This year=92s festival will be bigger and better=
=20
than ever=97with new pavilions for =93Home & Family,=94 =93Teens and=
 Children,=94 and=20
=93Poetry=94=97and takes place rain or shine from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the=
=20
National Mall between 7th and 14th streets in Washington, D.C.
         Pavilions devoted to =93Children,=94 =93Fiction & Imagination,=94=
=20
=93Mystery=94 and =93History & Biography=94 are back again, featuring=
 readings and=20
performances by more than 80 award-winning authors, illustrators and=20
storytellers.  Also scheduled are appearances by popular storybook and=20
television characters for the kids and book sales and author signings for=20
their parents.  Other pavilions will include displays of literacy and=20
reading promotion materials from around the country and offer fun, hands-on=
=20
activities for all ages.  And it=92s all free!
         Invited to appear at the 2003 National Book Festival are Robert=20
Caro, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of  =93Master of the Senate,=94 the=
 third=20
volume in his series =93The Years of Lyndon Johnson=94; the 2003 Caldecott=
 (for=20
illustration) and Newbery (for story) award winners in children=92s=20
literature, Eric Rohmann and Avi; mystery writer Laura Lippman, whose=20
protagonist Tess Monaghan lives in Baltimore; and in the new =93Home &=
 Family=20
Pavilion,=94 French chef, author, instructor and host of television cooking=
=20
shows, Jacques P=E9pin.
         Updates on participating authors and events occurring at the=20
National Book Festival will be announced during the coming months on the=20
