Selling our services to other teachers, and having to educate our
supervisors about what our job should be are, in my view, two very different
propositions. It is not necessarily the responsibility of a teacher to know
everything a librarian can do for her. However, in my view, it IS the
responsibility of an administrator to understand the roles of ALL the
special people and special programs in his school, including the library.
It is, after all, supposed to be his school, and he is ultimately
responsible for everything that goes on in it. This is why it both concerns
and disturbs me that these things do not seem to be included in any of the
training programs that are creating our school administrators. Rather
than trying to educate administrators one by one in the field, these types
of things should be part of any program for training supervisors.
