Joanne and all,

I've also noted some of the newer series that address curriculum needs are
"dumbed down" to about a second grade level. They have small formats, no more
than 30 pages, beautiful pictures and very little information. Forget the basics
like indexes and sometimes even a table of contents!

I had 2 separate salespersons visit this school year with books from some
smaller publishers. As we went through many of the sets, it was obvious that the
books were inappropriate for any student over 2nd grade. Yet there was set after
set of the same kind of book addressing curriculum needs (e.g. biomes, native
American tribes, etc.). The topics were for older elementary students but the
reading/interest level were very low.

I remarked about the quality to both salesmen and one told me that that's
what the publishers were putting out this year. He also suggested that if they
didn't sell well, the publishers would abandon this style of book.

Jo- who didn't order any of the low quality books
