TRAV:NYC:need advice

My family and I are going to be in NYC July 17 thru 20 and badly need some
advice as to how to best use the few days we have.  Should we stay in a suburb
and take public trans in? Would that be the cheapest way to go as far as
hotels?  What is the best guided tour to take? There are four of us, the kids are
both college age, so no little ones to deal with. We will be the proverbial
small-town Ohioans hitting the Big Apple for the first time. Should be
interesting. Thanks for any tips you can offer. (Last summer you all had ideas for
Montreal and they were a big help)
