To me it is a matter of teaching responsibility. The student must be held
accountable. There are times when a student mysteriously disappears and we
must follow through. The materials belong to everyone and we owe them the
time it takes to retrieve them.

It is much easier when we know a student is leaving as I am informed. No
student will have a transcript forwarded to the new school if library
obligations have not been met.

I have "bugged" other librarians across the country and am usually
successful retrieving the materials. I also believe it is part of our moral
duty to help each other in the profession. Ethically, I can not ignore
another librarian's request for assistance.

I realize that 8 lost books from one student is a tad too much for our
budget conscious libraries, but I do not want to be responsible for
"bugging" that student to retrieve these books for another school. This is
just a personal quirk of mine.
