The etiquette rule was that Mrs. John Doe (yes women who chose to change their
names lost both parts of their identity) became Mrs. Jane Doe (she got to take back
her first name so that the new trophy could use his name) after the divorce. John
Doe's widow, never got to reclaim her own identity and remained Mrs. John Doe
unless she happened to remarry and become Mrs. Harry Smith. By the way Chuck, Ms.
has nothing to do with a woman's marital status, any more than Mr. has to do with a
man's. I fail to see why it should be of any library patron's concern whether I am
now, or ever have been married. Or for that matter, what the old man's last name
is/was.
Thank goodness etiquette changes.
