I've received 50 wonderful and thoughtful reponses to my quandary concerning
whether or not to retire (after 33 years) and how one knows
that it's time. Of these 50, five thought I should stay in here for a while longer
since I probably wouldn't be so full of doubts if retirement
were really the right choice.(They may be correct.) Most of the other responders
said I should go for it. Many suggested getting a
part-time job in a public library, etc. for some added income. I should add that
I'm in a small town of 6500 - not a lot out there.

I was surprised at how many are pondering this same question and more than a little
gratified to learn that several retired media
specialists are still on the listserv even after retirement. All of them are happy
with their retirement and encouraged me to leave while I still
am happy with my job and before I start to dread coming to work.

Right now, thanks to your responses, I'm leaning toward sending in my papers. My
big hurdle is facing my superintendent for whom I've
worked forever although I really think my library would be better with someone new
and younger. I feel that my library is stagnant at this
point and I've lost the enthusiasm to make it alive again.

I'll let you know when and IF I take the big step. LM_NET has been such an
important part of my professional life that I don't know how
other media specialists get along without it. As has been stated here before, it's
the only link for many of us to libraries outside our own;
thanks to LM_NET, I've been able to offer educated opinions on many subjects in the
media field. I appreciate all of you who so graciously
responded to my post...
