I just finished inventory in our M/HS Library, and am about halfway through
inventory in the elem. With an automated system I'm able to keep on
circulating while doing inventory (I always do small chunks at a
time). So, we usually start about 3 weeks before school is out and do it
while the library is open and busy. It's been pretty crazy the last 2 days
with many last minute projects, but we were still able to inventory a
couple thousand items a day. I do have all materials due one week before
the last day of school so I can get most of them in before the students
leave. We continue to allow 1 item per student if they really need
something that last week. We actually did have the elementary non-fiction
shelves in perfect order for about 18 hours (14 of which were
overnight!!). We usually find a few items that got back on the shelves
without being checked in--and usually in a very strange spot as well. We
always find some little things that need to be cleaned up in the catalog as
well. And, when a dear Mama calls to say that Johnny absolutely returned
the book, I can safely say that is NOT on the shelf.
