Many of us have said we did "the" inventory when time allowed, while
we were open. Well, sure, my aides did the scanning of our *barcoded*
items in April, then we looked for all missed items and published a
list of what absolutely could not be found.
The catch is that there are two other inventories: one a list of
major items which must be reported to administration, plus a
spreadsheet I keep of everything else that is not barcoded. I thought
I would just check off everything on the admin. printout, report all
additions and deletions, then update my spreadsheet as needed. Wrong!
Less than two weeks before the end of school, our principal informed
us that we were barcoding everything worth more than $100, and filling
out a form for each item, giving about ten pieces of information.
I appear to be the official barcoding queen of the school, with 110
items reported. That means I also feel a need to add all the items on
the old printout but not barcoded to my spreadsheet--we are not, this
year, barcoding tables, chairs, bookshelves, book trucks, etc.
Sorry to say that, in spite of staying many hours late, I'm not
finished as of the last day of school, and I'm *not* relaxed!
For the last two weeks of school, my policy was "open by appointment
only." People who needed the library could use it if a teacher made
arrangements with me in advance, but I was not available for drop-ins.
Each person who comes to the library seems to need my time and
attention in one way or another. Much as I'd like to serve every
need, I can only do so much.
