I'm really enjoying this thread - I've gotten some great ideas. Being at an all-boys' school, I have a tendency to read "boy" books. A recent favorite of mine is "Rocket Boys" (aka "October Sky") by Homer Hickam, a wonderful memoir of growing up in coal country in West Virginia. I'd also second the recommendation for "Seabiscuit." Our city has just participated in a program called "A Tale for One City" - everyone read the same book. Our choice was "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe" by Fanny Flagg - it's delightful and somewhat provocative. Finally, if you're a fan of Douglas Adams, you might enjoy "The Eyre Affair" by Jasper Fforde, kind of a sci-fi/mystery/extremely funny novel.
