My thoughts - which may not be the majority opinion (my thoughts rarely are
:) )

daily interaction with mentors - especially non verbal interaction
daily interaction with peers - over coffee - with knockdown discussions
the amazement that occurs when a student discusses something and you get
many peers knocking each other over to respond at the same moment - the
passion that occurs, for example:

I remember one instance at Columbia in a Research Methods class when a
male student from Saudia Arabia was discussing his proposed thesis: a study
of the public library system in Saudia Arabia. The students in the course
were to bombard each student with questions concerning his/her research "to
provide rigor" to the study. I couldn't think of a question - except a
stupid one (I thought) which was "define public library." This lead to an
impassioned 3 hour discussion on the word "public" and we discovered that
the student's definition was not our definition or, in fact, Columbia's
definition. Public, to the student, was defined as male only. The
discussion could have been had, probably, online but I, for one, would have
missed the angry tones, the nodding heads, the leaping out of seats, and the
passion that resulted. That was in 1980 and I remember every action that
occured - even today.
