Our policy is to remove the cardboard stock ads, the fragrant ads (the ones
that open for smelling), subscription cards, and posters that come in these
magazines before we put them out.

When my Teen People arrived, I did cut out the FCUK ad. Normally I don't
censor and I usually purchase materials responsibly based upon my selection
policy...but with magazines, I'm placed at a disadvantage based upon the
financial decisions of those who publish the magazine. When there is
something that appears one month in a magazine that is completely out of the
"norm," I have removed it.

I do have Seventeen, SURF, and others that have some suggestive photos---
but it's becoming a problem because I serve students in grades 5-12. In
order to accommodate one group, I offend another. The databases are
becoming my only "safe-haven" when it comes to periodicals. But students
want the actual magazine with photos.

I don't know if there is a common-ground to provide for these students
because the media seems to want to sell and libraries must defend. However,
my selection policy provides me with some leverage to protect all of us
based upon community standards.

I agree that contacting the publisher is one way to voice our concern.
Since this is my first year to subscribe to Teen People (at this
library)...I will choose to present this fact to the publisher along with my
desire to remove this journal and replace it with something else.

Just an opinion.
