This was my original post:

For about the last five years or more, my elementary
school has had a storybook character parade around
Halloween. Last year was my first year at the school
so I wasn't quite sure what to expect and didn't
realize I needed to help the students prepare.
Students are encouraged to dress up as their favorite
storybook character holding the book with that
character in it and parade through the school and
outside. However, it seems that this parade/dress up
day is becoming more and more twisted into "make your
Halloween costume fit a book." At a grade level team
leaders meeting today, the problem with costumes was
discussed and I suggested changing the date to
November 21 to correlate with National Children's Book
Week instead of Halloween. I'd like to do some
promoting and explaining with the students (low
socio-eco status with little access to resources) this
year in advance so they understand that the storybook
character costume is different than wearing your
Halloween costume. I am thinking of creating a
PowerPoint to show the students a variety of pictures
of other students dressed as storybook characters. If
you have a website with pictures from your Storybook
Character Parade/Pary, please email the website
address to me. I'll be sure to give you credit in my
PowerPoint. I'll compile a hit of responses also in
case anyone else is interested. Also, any helpful
hints for getting more teachers involved in dressing
up too would be appreciated!
Thanks for sharing!

Here's a list of websites I found by searching with
Google. I'm going to pick out some pictures and make
a PowerPoint with one picture per slide. I'll have
the students guess who that storybook character is and
then I'll click for the words to appear on the slide.
Some of the links are long. You might have to retype
them instead of clicking or copying and pasting for
them to work for you.

Also, here are the three responses I received:
We did this at one school I worked at only with a
twist. Each person had to pin a "Who am I? " card to
the costume with three hints. Mine were something
like: "My real name is Jean Louise Finch but I am
better known by my nickname, My father is a Lawyer in
Maycomb county, My neighbor is Arthur Radley" I wore
a simple shirt and overalls. The day was a lot of fun.
If there is a "Who am I " component the characters can
be "everyday" type kids who would dress similar to
your students this would be easier for those with less
time/resources available to them. I wonder how many
kids would come in orange coveralls carrying shovels?

ps. Moving the date is a terrific first step.

Have the teachers dress as MS Frizzle. They can wear
an outfit that goes with what they are teaching.

I did a www.google.com search using the words: book
character costume... and came up with this one:
http://www.pike.k12.in.us/schools/gces/Character%20Costume.htm

and this one had some great ideas:
http://www.planetesme.com/parade.html

At my school we are not allowed to show recognizable
student faces...
but I did put this on the web after our Mother Goose
dress up day for
kindergartners:

Hope this information is useful for some of you out
there!
