On the other hand, based on the quality of the writing and integrity with
theme, I would rather spend the time with _The Lovely Bones_ than _Snow
Falling on Cedars_ .

NOT for 8th grade, NO!

Snow Falling on Cedars is good, more than 1 love
scene.

Speak by Anderson or Cold Mountain by Fraser or
the Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd are all
wonderful and would be great for this advanced group
of 8th graders.  I personally loved Cold Mountain; so interesting to read
about the rest of the country and what was going on while the men were
fighting the civil war.  Could not put it down and the kids would learn a
lot.  Great character development.
