Thanks to all who responded ... here is the HIT. Kathy Reynolds Thanks to those who sent fresh ideas for Grandparents Day activities. Here is the post. Kathy Reynolds ************************************** Our PE department invites grandparents to come for their grandchild's PE period. The PE teacher has a program of old games that were popular in grandparents time (marbles, pass the button, etc). The grandparents are also invited to stay and have lunch. PE schedules are sent home and notes attached to come only at PE times. ************************************** Have you read My Grandma, My Pen Pal, by Jan Dale Koutsky? I just met her at our local library. The book is wonderful, and so is she. She showed us the real life items she used to create the book. We made bubble gum wrapper chains shownon the page about getting gum in her hair. I would use this book along with a letter writing activity. It also would be cool to use technology and interview an older person and make a mini production using some of the questions on the author page. Just a thought. *************************************** I just got in some new books that made me think about doing multigenerational projects, one especially entitled "Aunt Claire's Yellow Beehive Hair" by Deborah Blumenthal. It's a lot less wacky than it sounds, and it's about a little girl trying to make a family scrapbook from all the stories she has heard. It would be lovely to get kids to work with their grandparents to create a similar project. Also, and simpler, there is 'Yoko's Paper Cranes' by Rosemary Wells, in which Yoko makes paper cranes and sends them to her grandparents whom she loves. The margin illustrations show how to make origami cranes. I thought about getting some pretty wrapping paper and doing these for a little take-away favor at storytime. Kathy J.
