LM_NET Archive

I was living in AK at the time the youths were banished. You could try checking the
archives of the Anchorage Daily News which carried many articles and editorials
about this.

Subject: HIT: More on Touching Spirit Bear--true story

Thanks to =A0Jean Gustafson, we have "the rest of =

the story." The information she found will certainly =

interest readers of Touching Spirit Bear.

She searched the archives at =

www.seatle-times.com =

(free registration required to search the archives) =

and found several length articles detailing the =

experiences of the young men banished for their =

violent crime. =

According to these articles, the story is true. =

(Remember, though, that the Times article I cited =

in the previous HIT indicated that Rudy James, the =

man who presented himself as a Tlingit tribal =

judge and suggested the banishment, had a =

history of debt, civil court judgments against him, =

and the Tlingit's disassociated themselves from =

the case.)

This is Jean's summary: "Both young men were =

removed from their islands after only 6 months =

because of disagreements within their tribe =

council. Completed their time in prision. One =

believes he has matured and is working very hard =

to become a better person. Then other is still a =

very angry young man and is in prision in Alaska =

for other charges."
 =

Thanks for the efforts of all the people who =

responded to this post. I'll post another hit when I =

hear back from Mikaelsen.

 =
