I just had one of the most rewarding conversations of my professional
life, and I just had to share it with you all! One of our seasoned
English teachers (10th grade general and AP English) just went to a BER
seminar by Walter M. Mayes entitled "The Best Young Adult Books of the
Decade and How to Use them in Your Program (Grades 6-12)". He came to me
SO EXCITED about the books the presenter booktalked. He wants to read
them, and to incorporate them into his program. He told me that he
finally "gets" what I've been talking about all these years! I've
booktalked for so long to his classes, and just last year I tried
talking to him about incorporating more contemporary literature into his
curriculum (along with some of the other English teachers). I've also
tried to get him to read some contemporary literature so he could
recommend books to his students, but all to no avail. We both referred
to the seminar as an "epiphany" for him! I just wanted to share that
it's not hopeless! Even seasoned teachers can "see the light!" I also
wanted to put a second-hand "plug" in for Walter Mayes and his BER
seminar. Maybe it might be good to recommend to some of your English
teacher colleagues? Their website is www.ber.org <http://www.ber.org/> .
(I've been to 2 of their seminars myself, which were excellent.). Also,
in the booklet from the seminar, Mr. Mayes has a website
www.walterthegiant.com <http://www.walterthegiant.com/> , in case you
are interested in seeing more about him and his presentations.
