Most of the books are just on the shelves from what I've seen. Very few teachers have the classroom library as one of the assigned jobs for their students. So, any arrangement is going to have to be maintained. Who is the class assigning to that task? What a great opportunity for the students to see that the librarian might be important to the collection! Don't mention this important feature of any formal arrangement, it becomes a learning moment, when a couple of months down the road the students find that the shelves have reverted back to the haphazard arrangement that prevailed before their vote. (Might warn the teacher, so they have the correct information when the students bring it to her attention.) Jean R. They remember the plot, they remember the color of the cover, but it's a rare third grader who can remember the title of a book.
