I think I accidentally responded to an individual poster when I meant to
respond to the list. Whoever I sent this message to please forgive me.

As a new LMS and therefore not far removed from the classroom, I felt a need
to respond to this discussion. I arranged my classroom library by genre.
That seemed to work well for us. If someone needed a particular book, I
could say it is with the mystery books. This also helped the children
locate the type of books they liked to read. As someone pointed out, we
don't arrange our home libraries by Dewey (at least most of us don't).
Without the aid of catalogs and spine labels, classroom teachers arrange
them to facilitate use. This might be a good time to distinguish between
private and public collection. A classroom library would be a private
collection where the users can make up their own rules about organization.
Whereas, a school library is a public collection and must follow cataloging
guidelines to help people locate the item(s) they need.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Subject: Re: ELEM: Shelving in the Classroom

If we plan to have life long readers and students who want to go to
libraries -- I would not advise to change how the students voted --

Let them go - as stated in an earlier post - if they wanted an opinion they
would have asked first --
This may be a great lesson to students about why library organization with
Dewey is important --
I try to look at the long term impact -- what will the students remember
when they get older -- the "librarian" made them change the way they voted
on the way they wanted books in their classroom-

You need to be consistent with the rest of the world.
Not only do you need to teach your students how to
find materials in your library, but in every other one

yours they can survive in mine just a well.
