My friend is soooooo grateful. Her comments: What a great response to my question! Thank you very much for putting = it out here in cyberspace, and getting me all those possible solutions. I appreciate it very much. Gratefully, Ruth =20 I knew we would get some answers for her you continue to amaze me. I = hope to be a resource for others some day. Thanks to all of the people who sent = in suggestions. Cynthia Collins Elementary 102 Legion Drive Scottsboro, AL 35768 jopat@scottsboro.org =20 It is so strange that you ask this. I am on maternity leave and stopped = by campus of Friday to check on things. My sub mentioned that she noticed = our paper cutter was dull and that she had asked around for solutions. She = was told and tried cutting a piece of wax paper and then cutting a piece of aluminum foil. She said it worked like a charm. =20 =20 I've been told by our technical repair team that paper cutter blades are = not sharpened. You need to tighten the adjustment screw to re-align the = blade with the guide/table edge and increase tension. =20 For a couple of years our art teacher had the metals teacher "sharpen" = her blades, but now that the metals teacher has left, we asked the county = repair specialists, and they said adjust, not sharpen. =20 =20 =20 I've heard either scissor sharpeners or lawn mower repair places. =20 I don't know if this is an option - but I know that some hardware stores around here sharpen things like ice skate blades and lawnmower blades - maybe they could do something with your paper cutter blade.. Just a thought.. =20 I'd suggest taking it to a place that sharpens knives and ice skates. Perhaps they could help you. =20 Check the local phone book for people who sharpen things: skates, lawn = mower blades, etc. Very often a local hardware store can give you some idea or = even do it for you. =20 You can detach the blade and either sharpen it yourself (maintenance = might do this) or take it to a local place - many hardware stores have = sharpening services. =20 Call a local printing company and ask who sharpens their paper cutter blades. Maybe they would be willing to take care of it for you!=20 =20 I would ask the instructors in the shop and woodworking dept (provided = the school has one) if they could handle the job. =20 I will ask our custodian. He does it yearly and it doesn't seem to be a = big deal at all. =20 =20 My husband is a photographer and happens to use an old-fashioned paper cutter. About once a year we take it to our local hardware store to be sharpened. Lawnmower vendors/repair shops may also sharpen them. =20 For what it is worth, we do not "sharpen" our paper cutter blade but our maintenance guy "adjusts" the angle and tightens the blade against the = table and that results in excellent results.=20 =20 You could try cutting sand paper with it. Or, contact a sewing machine/supply store, they usually sharpen scissors and may be able to = help you. =20 Our custodian sharpens ours (and adjusts it all at the same time). =20 =20 We found someone locally who did it. I am sure it is the same way one sharpens a knife/garden hoe. Take blade = arm off. Use file (a bastard file-not a vulgar word, it is the name of the file) to sharpen. You rub the file across the blade at an angle. =20 I'd contact a person who sharpens blades (for lawnmowers, etc.) =20 We have an old guy in our town who sharpens scissors and knives and he = also sharpens our at least 30 year old paper cutter for $10.00. =20 Our janitor sharpened it. He unscrewed the blade and sharpened it.=20 =20 =20 =20 --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
