Tech: Firewall Information

I should probably know all of this but...

Today I got my computer cleaned of all spyware, viruses, whatever. I want
to install a good firewall for protection. The last time I had one, every
time I went to do anything, I seemed to be blocked. Before I spend too much
time on the Internet, I want to try to protect myself. The techie I was
talking to didn't seem too big on McAfee or Norton's. I have AVG installed
(and it has already picked up on one worm). Does anyone have any
suggestions?

I'm also looking for Spybot. When I downloaded it before, it cleaned up all
of the spyware. Now, it seems, I have to pay for it to clean--it will scan
for free, however.

Any information or advice?
