Hello, Many years ago I had two middle school students who wrote to the families of Ellen Raskin and J.R.R. Tolkien. Both Mr. Raskin and someone from the Tolkien family replied. BTW, I would always include two cover letters: one to the publisher and one for the publisher to forward to the author. I also included a SASE for the author (or his/her family). The kids loved getting any response. My favorite was Roald Dahl, who always began his letter to the librarian, To the Handsome... or, To the Gorgeous... depending.
