I feel that I have to add my 2 cents to this topic.
When my library was first automated (before my time),
the title, author, barcode, call number was entered
into the system. Only a few books actually had subject
headings. I have been updating every book in the
system over the last three years and weeding heavily
along the way. Unless a book was completely destroyed,
I don't believe the library was ever weeded. I just
completed the 500s and am now working on the 600s.
Anyway, I have found that what works in my library is
the genre of the book dictates how many keywords I add
to the catalog. For example, last Spring I faced 85
second graders in two days looking for saint
biographies (without warning from the teachers). And
of course, being 2nd graders, they only wanted a bio
on the saint they were named after. The catalog
didn't have all the saints listed that appeared in the
collective biography books. With only 30 minute
classes, 3 second grade classes coming, no library
helpers...what a nightmare! I decided right then and
there, to temporarily stop working on the other Dewey
sections to take the time to put in all the saint
names. So this year I'm ready...bring them on!
