The 526 tag is the place to put contents notes. You can manipulate the indicator in front of the 526 tag to indicate whether you are listing the full contents or partial contents. I often list partial contents by just picking out the contents that are important at my school. I think contents notes are a wonderful tool for faculty and students. The MARC records that I often get from even the most reliable sources will have something like "insects" as the only topical subject heading, while the book's table of contents lists the insects by chapter. It only takes a minute to put in the 526 tag and chapter headings, and, from then on, the book is much more accessible, as you would want it to be. And you can use that book that you catalogued more thoroughly as an example to the students on how to go to broader subject headings. --- Donna Cook, Nacogdoches, Texas : Teacher Librarian Central High; District Library Coordinator, Central ISD; donnacook@lycos.com 936-853-9345 (work) 936-569-2426 (home) "Books are the holes in the fences of life"--Peg Kehret --------- Original Message --------- DATE: Thu, 26 Feb 2004 09:17:44 From: Robert Hiebert <RHiebert@SD6.BC.CA> To: LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU Cc: >Hello All, > >As I watch students (I'm in a high school of 500, grades 8 to 12) search my >catalogue I see that their expectations have been established by Google: >when they do a keyword search for 'marijuana' they expect to find every >book with information about marijuana; of course, that is not what happens; >they find only the books with the word 'marijuana' entered somewhere in the >record.
