Dear all, When I’ve done “Dewey Lessons” (hopefully in not too boring a way) with my high school students, I always tell them that they are learning a Life Skill. What they are learning will enable them to go into any “proper” library in the world and find the book they want/need. It will also help them find information on the Internet. (I was thinking long-term here, but maybe it’s more of a professional fantasy? Who knows.) A few times I’ve had kids point out that book stores don’t shelve by Dewey … the answer I give is along the lines that retail outlets “want you to *buy* particular products, but libraries are there to give you *free* information and help you find the books that YOU want to read”. Seems to work. Although I often think how much simpler school library life would be if we shelved by cover color (all the red books together, all the blue ones, etc).
