I've been reading with interest the discussion regarding Harry Potter books and movies. Today I had the interesting experience of reading Agatha Christie's Murder of Roger Ackroyd followed immediately by viewing the A&E David Suchet version of the same. My conclusions about books vs. movies probably mirror those of many others - if you can experience each separately without comparing, both have a lot to recommend them. If you read first and then view, you're almost guaranteed to be disappointed by the movie since it's just doesn't seem possible to develop the plot and characters as intricately in that medium. I'd almost rather see the movie first, then read the book to fill in the blanks, that way avoiding the seemingly inevitable disappointment. If I ever write a book, I don't think I'll let anyone make a movie of it, it would be too painful!
