I think the problem with seeing a movie after you've read the book is twofold.
First even if the movie stays close to the book ,as has been pointed out they can't
include everything- how long would the next HP run if they put all of it into the
movie-but also as you read you paint your own pictures of what everyone looks like,
what the setting in like etc. Of course the author gives you some clues -- long
dark hair falling in ringlets, violet eyes etc but you flesh out the details which
probably never match the director's vision!

The second problem is those movies where little is left of the book but the title!
I love William Kienzle's Father Koessler mysteries so when they made "The Rosary
Murders" into a movie I couldn't wait to see it. Not only wasn't it a particularly
good movie-- they cut one of the three main characters ( there were two reporters
from rival Detroit newpapers who were in a "relationship") They cut the male
reporter and developed a "romance " between the priest and the female reporter.
Talk about dramatic license. I understand the author just sold them the rights and
had no say in what happened to his story.

A few years ago Lois Duncan spoke at our state conference and mentioned how she had
bought tickets to see "I know what you did last summer" As the movie started she
pulled out her ticket stubs to see if she was in the right theater because what she
was seeing was not anything she had written.
