To Have And Have Not is a classic example.

I try to go to the theater to enjoy a movie on it's own terms.  The one
book that I could not stand the movie version of is Hunt for Red October.
All action and no character development.  With HP, the earlier episodes
gave us the background, now it's time to go along for the ride.

BTW, I read that those involved in producting Azkaban wanted to split the
book in half, but could not make it work.
