While it is true that most books are disappointing when made into = movies, itis not an infallible rule. One very notable exception was "In = the Heat of the Night" with Sidney Potier and Rod Steiger. The book, = which I read years before the movie came out, was basically your average = police procedural mystery -- but what those actors did with the roles = raised it to a whole new level. Maybe the difficulty begins when you = choose to portray an already rich and complex story. But it is possible = . . . even if rare. . . to make a movie that actually transcends the = book.
