Over the years I have forgiven fines for many kids who could not afford to
pay for the book. This is usually done at the end of the year when we have
exhausted all efforts to get the book or money back. I explain to the child
that this was a special situation and will not be repeated. The following
year I keep a watch on the child's borrowing activities. If I see a similar
situation developing, I contact the child and the parent much earlier. I
find that early warnings can have better results.
